Maturation of the neuromuscular junction in masseters of human fetus.

OBJECTIVES The aim of the present investigation is to examine if the histological maturation of the neuromuscular junction in the masseters of human fetuses has already begun by the 12-th week of gestation or not. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-four masseter muscles from 14 human fetuses at gestational age 12 weeks were divided into two groups. In the first group, muscle sections were stained wi...

Monte Carlo simulation of miniature endplate current generation in the vertebrate neuromuscular junction.

A Monte Carlo method for modeling the neuromuscular junction is described in which the three-dimensional structure of the synapse can be specified. Complexities can be introduced into the acetylcholine kinetic model used with only a small increase in computing time. The Monte Carlo technique is shown to be superior to differential equation modeling methods (although less accurate) if a three-di...

Neuromuscular junction in health and disease.

A number of illnesses and other factors can affect the function of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ). These may have an affect at pre- or post-junctional sites. This review outlines the anatomy and the physiology of the NMJ. It also describes the mechanisms and physiological basis of many of the disorders of the NMJ. Finally, the importance of these disorders in anaesthetic practice is discussed.

Deuterium oxide and temperature effects on the properties of endplate channels at the frog neuromuscular junction

The effects of deuterium oxide (D2O) and temperature on the properties of endplate channels were studied in voltage-clamped muscle fibers from the frog Rana pipiens. Studies were performed at temperatures of 8, 12, 16, and 20 degrees C. The single channel conductance (gamma) and mean channel lifetime (tau) were calculated from fluctuation analysis of the acetylcholine-induced end-plate currents...

Changes in neuromuscular junction endplate current time constants produced by sulfhydryl reagents.

The acetylcholine receptor is a protein that contains certain critical disulfide bonds. Experiments were designed to determine the role such bonds might play in the physiological activity of the receptor. Modification of the receptor with sodium bisulfite and diamide produced an increase in the time constants of the miniature endplate current without changes in the single-channel properties of ...
